Lyrics - Pretend You're Happy

EVERYONE'S TIRED IN BOSTON

Here is a shotglass now take off your pants

or stand with us here by the coffeeshop.
Yes you're invited but try not to speak
sit and look pretty and laugh at the jokes we tell
strut like you mean it and go with the flow
the world is a footnote to social grace
it's all the same
old empty game

everyone's tired in boston and time moves on
so i'll walk out in the sun through the streets
feeling its breath on my skin

where am i now
where are my friends

i'm gonna let myself live again
i'm gonna let my blood flow again
i'm gonna take in the world i've been hiding behind this bitter wall

let go the pain
let go the past

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE EARTH

i'll know how to give without contempt
and be open without fear
learn to rest inside another's eyes
i'll know i'm home every time i breathe in
when i make it to the other side of the earth

all of the people there will be
happy glowing safe and free
every prison made a playground
i'll know i'm home
every face that i see
when i make it to the other side of the earth

all of my scars will melt away
as i give into the sun
free from all my twisted memories
i'll know i'm home as i float on the wind
when i make it to the other side of the earth

no more police and no more laws
no more judges no more bombs
no more money no more politics
i'll know i'm home
and i'll know home is me
when i make it to the other side of the earth

WHERE DO THE CIRCLES ALL LEAD?

i dreamt i could fly so i left it all behind
spread my wings lift off the ground
up to the big blue sky over the houses
and over the highways
all perfectly placed in a grid
all of the poeple like ants on a mission
not knowing the world i can see
speeding around in their shapes
always looking ahead rushing past
everyone.i thought who am i
some strange ant up in the clouds
looking down on stone and steel
and lives of those like me
moving in straight lines that end up in circles
but where do the circles all lead
all of the people pretending they're happy
not wanting to fall or to bleed
or let others see all the pain and the fear underneath
but it's in everyone so i cried for us
cried my insides out of me
and when it was gone i faced a void and i dove in
i found a glow underneath all the sadness
and that's the place i'd rather be
why waste me flight in these tormented circles
when i can be happy and free
if i rest my head in the heart of this great mystery
swallowing everyone

PRETEND YOU'RE HAPPY MUST DIE
easy avarice the undertoe
they're dead in the gutter while the trumpets blow
and i see the scars and bullets in your eye
pretend you're happy
pretend you're happy
pretend you're happy must die
.

IF THERE'S NO LIGHT IN THIS WORLD

i used to dream that my screams could tear down walls
or that i'd find something magical to overcome the misery
that crushes from above into dust

if there's no light in this world let's stand in the dark and build our own

pointing the blame smashing bricks into my disbelieving face
cynical songs of hypocrisy and unacknowledged pain and love
that crushes from inside into mud

if there's no light in this world let's stand in the dark and be our own

THE TOWN WHERE THE VISIONS FALL DOWN

walk into town and i hear the same sounds
as i end up alone once again
drowning in jokes of my friends
curtains are drawn and the actors come on
and the spectators cheer for the team
hiding what's under the dream

clear the oceans out as you scream your heart is open
but it's only at the doorway and the bar

known you for years let's go get thirty beers
and then shotgun our fingers to spew
that's what good friends like us do
home is too hot but it's all that i've got
to escape form the empty refrain
link after link on the chain

clear the oceans out as you scream your heart is open
but it's only at the doorway and the bar

walk into town and i hear the same sounds
as i get in my car and i go
leaving the ice and the snow
leaving the town where the visions fall down
and the hopes are shrugged off with a sneer
nothing is left for me here

clear the oceans out as you scream your heart is open
but it's only at the doorway and the bar

TEAR DOWN THE WALLS

stick to standard protocol makeup makes no face at all
rationed captions crouch and hide
please say no one saw inside

tear down the walls and kick open the gate
and set fire to the door where you're hiding and waiting
for death to come slowly while you store your breath
safely where no eyes can see

WHERE UTOPIA LIVES

here's to the dreams and the promises who breathe despite it all
when it comes down to it there's nothing to come down to at all
soothing sounds of disillusion safe behind the iron wall
scars and bullets worldly hopeless rest
safe behind the iron wall

friends and strangers us and them the good ones and the bad
safe illusions distance kept with answers far outside
you said goodbye to the womb
when the doctors pulled out your head
the world has got you now

all or nothing truth or lies the bottom or the top
frustrated familiar lines with answers far outside
you said goodbye to the womb
when the doctors pulled out your head
the world has got you now

and i've never met infinity so she's no longer my judge
and i've never met eternity
so she's no longer my judge
and i've never met with certainty so she's no longer my judge

but i've met you and we're here now and that's where
 utopia lives
